It started at 3 a.m., with a phone screen.
Stefanie was up with the baby and she turned her phone around to show me what she had just been reading about the wipes we were using. We finished the change. Then we sat there in the dark, not panicking, just quietly aware that we did not actually know what we had been putting on our baby twelve times a day for months.
Ryer was two when Palmer came home. A toddler and a newborn meant a lot of changes, a lot of sticky hands, and a diaper bag with four different kinds of wipes in it and somehow never the right one.
Palmer’s skin used to come out red and irritated after changes with the wipes we were using. That is a big part of why ours are so simple, with a touch of coconut oil.
That is a bad feeling, and it is a completely avoidable one. So we set out to make a wipe with a label we could read out loud, big enough to finish a diaper change in one and tough enough for the rest of the day’s messes, at a price that did not make us ration it. It took a year.
Somewhere along the way we realized the wipe was only half of it. What really gets you through those years is other parents: the ones who text back at 3 a.m., who hand you the thing you forgot, who tell you it gets easier. That is who we are building Stork & Sun with.

Yes, there are preservatives. They have to be.Without them, a pack that is 99.6% water would grow mold and mildew — and that is the last thing you want on your baby’s skin. Four of the seven ingredients are preservatives, and together they come to less than two tenths of one percent of the wipe. That is the smallest amount that keeps a pack fresh from the day it is made to the day you finish it. We would rather show you the exact number than hide the word.
